He couldn't get his hind legs to work to get up but he sure tried. Lots of heart right to the end. Fortunately his good friend Dr. Hannah Smith wasn't far away and got here to help. We sent him to the big sleep with his buddy Casino by his side. Dancer was 31.

Dancer came to me at the age of 14 from a lesson barn in Rochester. He was started on the race track but I'm sure he was too slow for that job. I think his life only got better as he grew up and got older. He really loved living on the hill. When we moved here and he was turned out with his best friend Frisco, he absolutely smiled (and would not come to the gate!) I like to think he and Frisco are in a a big lush field with someone to frustrate with their mischief together! A sense of humor is a necessity in life and those two had that in spades! So rest well old friend - you certainly have earned your place above."

Share with us your memories/stories of Dancer by clicking on the purple "Post a Comment" link below. Camps included daily lessons, course design, preparation of horses for a show and care of tack, as well as a "horseless horse show." Camp riders then participated in the Chemung County Fair Show which Cassie Panton helped to run.

For pictures go to www.omniequestriancenter.com and the "Gallery" Page for the link to the "Summer Camps and Fair Show Slideshows and Web Gallery."

Cassie not only cares for all of the horses at Omni and instructs lessons but somehow also manages to find time to cook gourmet food that she shares with Omni riders. We've had many requests from people who want Cassie's salsa recipe which she has generously shared below:

Cassie's Salsa

Start with some dehydrated onion (chopped) to keep it from being runny
2 cans dices tomatoes w/green chilies
2 cans organic whole tomatoes (I like Muir Glen) juice in salsa then process
2-6 cloves garlic - don't be shy!
1 bunch radishes chopped
1-2 onions -any - clean out fridge!
1-2 cans chopped green chilies
1 sweet pepper chopped
1 bunch cilantro chopped - stems have great flavor so use em with 1/4 to 1/2 cup olive oil
1 cucumber peeled and chopped (I use burpless srapped in plastic)
2-4 fresh jalapenos diced
3-4 stalks celery diced -optional
2 carrots diced - optional
leemon or lime juice or red wine vinegar
salt (pref Kosher) & freshly ground pepper

Dump some dehydrated onion into a big bowl (ie 1/4 cup), drain tomatoes & add to bowl (chop if not already done so,) add everything else in order. Cucumber is great for cleaning out your food processor. If you want "heat" add I can serenos or jalapenas (juice in salsa then process) or a great cheater is Mrs. Renfro's green salsa - it's very hot and can be added for consistant heat by the spoonful to taste (wegmans or tops.) Red hot blues available in the organic section are a real treat esp w/guacamole.
You can make amazing quacamole by adding salsa & a little mayo to ripe (soft) avocados with a pinch of ground coriander and mash with a fork. Enjoy!!!

Smokey is home !!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_F8Fu11_swaE/S-drZT88k1I/AAAAAAAAATE/O-mME6bILo0/s400/smokeyandclaire_may2010.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5469458355061560146" />

Smokey arrived bright-eyed last evening all the way from N.H.
She all but dragged me to get to her pasture & friends ... and of course ran up the hill, tail straight in the air! The award recognizes Andrea for her outstanding commitment to supporting and encouraging the growth and development of her colleagues throughout her career at Corning. She was honored in the individual category.

Andrea, who rides Sweet Pea and Little Chap at Omni, is a supervisor at Corning in the Research Melters organization for Display Technologies Product & Process Development. Her nominations paint a picture of someone who is always willing to listen, help, and provide helpful and supportive feedback. "She demonstrates a fundamental belief and trust in people by actively seeking different thoughts, ideas, and approaches," wrote one colleague. Another said, "She is always quick to respond with words of encouragement and recognition...when she says, 'Good Job!' you know she truly means it."

That is definitely our experience of Andrea at Omni. We are thankful for her positive, forthright, and encouraging approach toward both people and horses. My wife Ann and I have been coming up to see Cassie and Steve at Omni both spring and fall since 1998, normally spending about a week or so. We lost Cassie's Mom to cancer last year, so this is the first time I have spent the whole month of July living with Steve and Cassie. I was able to see first hand the "joys" of haying, fixing equipment, horse shows, lessons, and generally seeing life around the barn as I chatted with the many folks that "hang out" there.

They don't let me drive tractors anymore but they did allow me to fix them and play gopher for picking up parts. I now know every aisle of the Tractor Store, Lowes, Sam's Club and Tops. Oh yes, they did allow me to drive the mower...

I have always been impressed by the Omni family and the camaraderie between so many people who seem to watch out for each other. This year was special for me to get to know the Omni "family" better and see how they all pitched in when the hay wagons arrived and the way they supported each other at horse shows.

One of my favorite activities is wine tastings. I taught this art to Cassie and she has surpassed her teacher. We spent a day at the Wine Festival at Watkins Glen and another day at various wineries around the beautiful Finger Lakes region.

A memorable moment happened at one of the wineries. The wine maker doing our tasting looked at me and then at Cassie and blurted out, "Brother and sister?" For a guy who is a few months shy of turning 80, I was thrilled but Cassie was not so impressed. Her response was, "Hey, I'm not even a speed limit yet!" Cassie received a special discount from the winery that night - and just to clarify - it wasn't a senior discount.

My new title as "Official Omni Gopher" means I hope to be back for another long stay next summer. This will have to wait until things finally warm up in New York - mabe around August - I don't do cold weather any more. This is one of the privileges of turning 80!

Cassie Travels to Las Vegas for World Cup 2009

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 256px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_F8Fu11_swaE/SgHVPY8YmlI/AAAAAAAAAOk/SjjpiduJ1l8/s320/CassieLasVegas09+002.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5332777894153853522" />
Everyone thinks of Las Vegas as gambling, glitz & glam...which it is, but the natural wonders around Vegas are stars in their own rite. Evelyn and I (Cassie) visited Mt. Charleston - they had snow down to 3,000 feet on our 1st day!!! (We were afraid we brought it from New York!) The mountains are so powerful - who knew there would be skiing 45 minutes away from the strip?

We also made it to Red Rim Rock Canyon which being only 30 minutes away should not be missed...we ran out of time and didn't make it to Brice Canyon. I did get to do my heicopter tour of the Grand Canyon. Maverick Helicopter Tours made this the highlight of the trip other than the World Cup itself. We did see Elton John and his red piano - the biggest "glam" treat ever!

There is nothing quite like the World Cup. We knew the point standings going in, but every course desinger presents a different set of challenges. Mr Anthony D'Ambrosio presented an excellent series of tests for the talented field and of course lady luck has her say also. To be fast and accurate is not without great calculated risk but there was only 1 fall all week (the rider landed on his fee!) which demonstarates the quality of horsemanship we were privileged to watch. A HUGE "thanks" to my firends Sandy & Willa for making this trip possible. The had a conflict and gave us 2 VIP tickets for the show. Three separate sessions were held for all ages and level of rider. Everyone enjoyed the great instruction, great food and the antics by Pat's "assistant" instructor "Tiger."

Michelle Neumayer has uploaded some pictures from the clinic below. She had to shoot through the gallery glass as there was dust being stirred up in the ring. This made interesting effects with the light streaming in from the back door as the horses passed by. She says of her trip, "It was a great time with great friends and great events". She was there for the World Cup and also managed to get in some sightseeing, including the creation of a fun video called the "Magic Carpet Ride" (ask Cassie to see it!) Apparently Cassie was playing at a slot machine and thought she had broken the machine when it started making a lot of weird noises. Turns out she had won over one hundred dollars on a five dollar bet. Next challenge for Cassie was to figure out how to get the money out of the machine! She placed as Champion in the Under Saddle, and 4th Over Fences for her region at that show, which has qualified her for the Zone 3 competition this Saturday April 7th. (If you place 1st or 2nd at "Zones" you go to Nationals May 4-7 in Boston.) Erica's team placed 5th out of 15 teams for their region despite having only 3 riders, behind West Virginia University, Bethany College, University of Pittsburgh, and Alleghany College.

Erica has worked hard this year, with a double major in chemistry and sociology. Michelle Neumayer came to photograph the under 6-hour newborn and found him attempting to walk, feed and explore his stall. The biggest challenge for the little fellow was figuring out which end of Mommy the milk came from. He worked on this a few times, successfully feeding, and then needed a long nap to recover his strength. By the time Michelle left he was looking very confident at using his legs and was beginning to explore both his mother and his stall with confidence and curiosity. He and his Mother were nickering to each other as she nuzzled him with gentleness and amazement.

Enjoy the pictures of our Baby Boy!!!

We're Expecting a Baby!!!

Everyone at Omni is excited and waiting in anticipation for "Piper" to give birth.
